look into the future

New Year’s Resolutions are often not bold declarations of our intent to realize an Impossible Future in the coming year, but good intentions, most of which are soon forgotten after the holiday period. But what if you turned that around 180 degrees?

coaching contract

As you may have picked up on from my blogs, I have been having a lot of fun working with people in the Masterful Coaching Certification process. Programs at the Pentagon and at my country house in Waltham Massachusetts have been both impactful and enjoyable.Following the last session, I received an email from one of the participants from a Big Co. His email and my response might give you an idea of what happens in the coaching part of the program.

imagine

Several months have gone by since I have written here and I’d like to tell you about what I’ve been up to. In the late summer, I began working with someone who I believe has the potential to be an extraordinary leader. I am speaking of Reilly Finn, the VP of Corporate Communications for a Tier 1 Defense Company. Her response: A world without war!

Powe, the oldest of 7 children, spent a considerable amount of his childhood at the flea market helping his mother, Connie Landry, sell trinkets, toys, and used clothing from the back of a van. That was how the single mother supported the children after the fire and before Alameda County Child Protective Services placed Powe and his siblings in foster care.

panama canal

In researching my mentoring story about Ike, I read something in his memoir, At Ease, that captured my interest about the building of the Panama Canal. It turns out that the Canal Zone is one of the wettest regions in the world, where there are torrential downpours eight months out of the year, to the tune of three inches an hour. One day after Ike and Connor were inspecting the trails around the canal, they returned to find the entire army encampment, including Ike’s house, buried by a gigantic mud slide.

September 19, 2006, by Robert Hargrove No comments yet
future planning

I think that perhaps the thorniest issue I have come across in executive coaching is not whether someone has a vision—“game plan”—but whether they can execute on that amid the pressure of doing their day job and delivering short-term results. I have found that it is very easy for an executive coach to get a decision maker excited about a new leadership roadmap or game-changing strategy, however, all too often, you discover when you check back a month later that nothing very much has happened.
